Retroperitoneal tumors originate from the deeper portions of the abdomen and pelvis. They are usually diagnosed in a later stage when they are bigger as they show no symptoms in the initial stages when they are smaller.
Lump abdomen, unexplainable weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue are some of the presentations.
Most retroperitoneal tumors are treated with surgery. The tumor is completely removed with wide clear margins to ensure its spread is prohibited. Chemotherapy (drugs to kill the cancer cells or stop them dividing) and radiation therapy (use of high-energy x-rays or other radiations to completely kill the cancer cells or keep them from advancing) along with surgery may be required in the treatment of retroperitoneal tumors.
