When a child ingests foreign substances such as toys, buttons or coins, the condition is called foreign body ingestion. This is mostly witnessed in little ones who are between the age group of 6 months and 3 years. Accidental swallowing of dentures is common in adults.
Symptoms are usually vague but can include difficulty in swallowing, pain or discomfort in the esophagus or abdomen based on the site of the object.
Most foreign bodies exit the body through regular bowel movements but some might need endoscopic intervention or surgery. This decision will be taken by the gastroenterologists based on the time of the ingestion, kind of substance ingested, and where it is lodged in the body.
