Penetrating and blunt abdominal trauma are the two major kinds of abdominal trauma. Penetrating abdominal trauma is when the abdominal cavity injured by a gunshot wound (also known as GSW) or a stab wound. Blunt abdominal trauma is an injury usually caused by motor vehicle collisions (also known as MVCs), recreational catastrophes or falls. The small intestine, large intestine, and liver are the most commonly affected organs in penetrating abdominal trauma. The spleen, liver, small bowel, colorectum, diaphragm, and pancreas are mostly affected in blunt abdominal trauma.
These patients are initially resuscitated and then the abdominal trauma is managed by a team of doctors. Surgery is required depending on the type of trauma, hemodynamic stability of the patient and extent of underlying organ damage.
