Also known as non-ulcer stomach pain or non-ulcer dyspepsia, functional dyspepsia (FD) is a condition wherein there is structurally nothing wrong with the digestive tract but one still has frequent symptoms of indigestion. It is termed so as no specific disease or diagnosable disorder has been found to cause this condition.
The patient may show symptoms of ulcers, pain, and discomfort in the upper abdomen along with bloating, belching, nausea and weight loss. The female sex is affected more especially elderly and smokers.
Medications such as H2 receptor blockers, proton pump inhibitors, antidepressants, and antibiotics can help relieve the symptoms. Changes, like eating smaller meals, reducing the consumption of fatty food, reducing stress, and losing weight if obese, can be followed to get relief in the long term.
